February 16, 2023 Curio Bay in The Caitlins, NZ

Today, we drove to the southern most point on the South Island in the Southern Hemisphere: Curio Bay in the Caitlin Mountain Range. Our drive along the western coast was spectacular. Best Views Yet!

There were many scenic stops along the way. We stopped at two wonderful places. Nugget Point Lighthouse where the views were breathtaking and the skies were deep blue and the ocean was azure. We saw fur seals playing in the surf and lots of boulders & rocks.

Our second stop, was Purakaurni Falls. We tramped about a mile to see this beauty situated in a lush green forest called a Podocarp Forest. The Falls were stunning and are the most photographed falls on the South Island.

In Curio Bay, we stayed in the Salt House BnB that overlooks a gorgeous wide and long beach and the Tasman Sea. We haven't found a crowded beach yet-we had this one all to ourselves. Downside was, that it was pretty remote: a 30 minute drive to the nearest restaurant and grocery, which would have been nice to know in advance since there wasn't any food included. We each had our own room on the ground floor that opened out to the backyard that bordered on the beach. We could see and hear the ocean's surf from our rooms.

That evening before sunset, we drove to a nearby area where the rare Hoiho Yellow Eyed Penguins reside. We waited patiently with others and were rewarded with a distant sighting of 2 fledging penguins coming out of their nest, who may have had yellow eyes but they were too far away to see. But we did see their feathers & the feathers were blue. They looked so cute, especially when they moved. We think they were waiting on their parents to bring them dinner. We enjoyed another Tipple Time at the house, of course we had alcohol with us, just not food.
