2017 Group Friend Pics

Our dear friends, Jeff & Ellen are very good at remembering their tripod when groups of friends gather. Jeff has shared these priceless photos with us so instead of going back & fitting them in my blog, I am going to add a collage of our adventures with our friends from some of 2017.

Our Summary of Day Dreams 2017 Bahamas Adventure

Our first cruise on Day Dreams to the Bahama Islands certainly was a successful adventure. We traveled with our KK fleet of Sea Dweller, Waterford & Lauryl Anne, for most of the trip. We made a great team & family.  We cruised over a thousand miles since leaving Marathon: exactly 1,100 miles. Twenty five different places were explored. A total of 44 nights anchored or moored and 13 nights at dock for our 2 month trip to the islands. Beating our old record: we anchored/moored for 32 consecutive days.

We left Marathon FL on March 10, 2017 & arrived back to Jacksonville, FL on May 9, 2017. When we left the Bahama Islands, Sea Dweller stayed. Lauryl Anne & Waterford left with us & we crossed the Gulf Stream together. We veered off when we were east of Cape Canaveral & headed north for Jacksonville; Lauryl Anne & Waterford continued north to Bald Head Island, NC.  Our final cruise took 36 hours; Waterford & Lauryl Anne's cruise was 72 hours long.

The green stars are some of the places we stopped.

Captain Garry on Waterford used some of his time very constructively to write this poem about our Bahama's Adventure.  He gave me permission to share it here and to publish it so we will always have it. He's captured our recent adventure admirably.

It Blew – But it did not suck
A poem by Capt. Garry B
It Blew – But it did not suck

We anchored by night
We anchored by day
Always hoping our trusty vessels would stay
Water so clear or … 15,000 foot blue
It would take your breath away

The Park was just amazing – not a place to hoard
Shelling and fishing are not allowed – the “Wine Thing” stayed on board
Now we too are members – some actors in the crowd
‘Leave prints – take pics’ – that’s all that is allowed

It was always understood we would grab a ball
Whenever we thought we could
At Boo Boo Hill we even stacked some wood
We dinghy’d right and dinghy’d left -- we really had no troubles
We all enjoyed the gorgeous day we dinghy’d to her Bubbles
We dinghy’d to each other – for many happy hours
One time we even dinghy’d under – that took some people power

We ate real well
But that was pale
Compared to the wine and liquor
We bought some lobster, caught some conch
And drank a bit of rum
It added up to amazing FUN
At Staniel we played like Bond and crew
We dove the very cave
We saw the pigs, but no one fed big mama’s greedy face
‘Cause where we’re from, that’s really out of place

We danced and hiked
Then rode our bikes
And even took a golf cart -- without regret or fret
Drive on the left – that you don’t forget

The storm at Spanish was scary – 60 knots or maybe more
It broke and flew -- glass was on the floor
It did everything but hail
But the crews – chins up, prevailed

It rained real hard – fuel tanks really float
We should have pulled the plug – please let me make a note
But have no fear – t’was not that often
Poor boats -- wash downs were seldom an option

We were always fishing-- and sometimes catching
But never quite enough
Come to find out landing the big ones
Was really kind of tough

We took our turns at leading
And wrote a book of rules
Record setting over-nighters took a lot of skill
But these great crews certainly had the will

All in all we had a ball
Great memories one and all

If you ponder was it really worth -- the effort that it took
View Cambridge pics from on high … and really take a look
The pictures real, the colors true
Admit it now … you’ve never seen THAT blue

Until our special Krogen family rolls on again … for a few more thousand miles
Recall these months of Island Time with your sun-tanned happy smiles

Remember ‘82-82’ …. and shouting “slow it down, Fish-On --- Fish-On
So it’s not FARWELL – It’s just See Ya Later – Sail on dear friends, Sail-On

It Blew …. But it did not suck!

May 2-6, 2017 Man O War, Fowl Cay, Green Turtle Cay;Abaco Bahamas

Continuing our exploration of the Abaco's, we moved north a short distance to Man-O-War.  Man-0-War has been a center for boat building & repair for many years. They make beautifully handcrafted fiberglas & wood vessels. According to our guidebook, No alcohol is served anywhere on Man-O-War but I did hear a rumor that the Dock & Dine at the Marina now serves beer & wine but we did not stop so I can not confirm. We did enjoy a walking tour of the small town & found the boat builder, the Sail Shop that doesn't sell sail bags but only canvas bags, the Fabric store that sells unique Androsia Batik fabrics and the ice cream store.  Most of the businesses are owned & operated by the Albury family.
At anchor outside of Black Sound, Dave's got the conch shell

Lauryl Anne & Day Dreams stopped at Fowl Cay Preserve to snorkel after leaving Man-O-War .  It was a beautiful day and the coral heads & reef were full of tropical fish and colorful coral.  Fowl Cay area has been the best snorkeling we've done while in the Bahamas. Sandy Cay is supposed to be great too but it was too rough the day we attempted to snorkel that reef. The water here at Fowl Cay in Abaco, surprisingly  was as clear as Exuma.  The clouds, sky and water were amazing! David's always saving something for us, first me, then our ladder and then our dinghy, What an amazing friend to have!
We dropped our ladder & Dave retrieved it!

After getting our fill of snorkeling, we pulled anchor and moved on to Green Turtle Cay. Green Turtle Cay has 2 harbors to choose from: Black Sound & White Sound.  We chose White Sound to stay due to deeper water & the availability of mooring balls. Green Turtle Cay is a small island with a population of about 450 but it has charm, great Marinas & a nice town, New Plymouth, with good restaurants, groceries & hardware stores. What made it even more enjoyable, was that we reconnected with the Nelsons on Waterford.  We also ran into Pauline & Mark on Next Dance. We biked, swam, walked and laughed.  We found a great beach bar, a swimming pool with Happy Hour and delicious bakery. Jacque loves turtles & we found some friendly green turtles for her to feed. Our dinghy did take a beating when it got caught under the dock at high tide.  David, Doug & Garry had to jump in & rescue the poor thing.  In order to get it out from under the dock, they had to deflate it.  Thanks to great friends, our dinghy & Doug survived!

Our weather window opened up & it was time to leave so we could cross the Gulf Stream back to the states in favorable weather.  Lauryl Anne, Waterford & Day Dreams all said good-bye to Next Dance and headed to an overnight anchorage @ Mangrove Cay.  This anchorage is not very protected, actually anchored quite far from the island, we were here strictly to stage for crossing in the morning. The moon was almost full & the winds had subsided.  Looked good for the next days crossing.
This Gang's last night out together for awhile!
May 8, We received sad news this morning, Doug's sister Vicki passed away.  She became ill 3 weeks prior with cough, fluid retention & difficulty breathing.  She was diagnosed last week with stage 4 peritoneal cancer.  May Vicki rest in peace.

The weather, wind and waves were perfect for our Gulf stream crossing.  All 3 of us left early in the morning and the water continued to calm.  We originally were going to leave the other 2 boats when we got close to Ft. Pierce but the water is like glass (DAC:dead ass calm) and Doug wants to get back to Jacksonville so he can fly out & attend Vicki's funeral on Friday, this being Monday.  We all kept going and we veered off around 2:00 AM near Cape Canaveral. The moon lit our journey and I saw the moon set & the sun rise. It took us 36 hours to arrive at the Jacksonville inlet.  We  could not make it to The Marina @ Ortega Landing before dark, so we anchored just off the St John River before downtown.  Lauryl Anne & Waterford kept going for a 3 night total, journey to Bald Head Island.
